« Wave is hiring a Junior Software Engineer. \nWe are making Africa the first cashless continent. \n In 2017, more than half of sub-Saharan Africa’s population did not have a bank account. There are good reasons for this. The fees may be too high, the nearest branch may be miles away, or there may be no one to accept your card. Without access to financial institutions, people are forced to hide their savings under their mattresses. Small business owners rely on lenders who charge exorbitant interest rates. Parents stand in line for hours to pay school fees in cash. \nWe solve this problem by developing financial services that simply work, are readily available, universally accepted, and have no account fees. You can use Wave to send money even in places where electricity, water, and roads aren’t always working. In November 2017, we launched a mobile app for cash deposits, withdrawals, peer-to-peer and business payments in Senegal. In 2019, we also expanded into Ivory Coast. It currently has millions of users and is growing rapidly. Our goal is to make Africa the first cashless continent and this is where you come in… »
How you’ll help us achieve it
We are looking for junior engineers who want to develop their skills, are good at asking for help when they need help, have strong communication skills and are independent. You’re responsible for building and improving the way people pay with Wave. You will be responsible for every step of the process, from understanding the problem to providing solutions to users to helping the customer support team resolve issues.
Our to-do list is always changing, but here are some of our current projects:
- By integrating with national electricity provider Senelec, people will be able to pay their electricity bills with Wave.
- Develop an app for business owners to pay their employees using Wave.
- By building software to manage phones and prevent theft, we’ve enabled thousands of taxi drivers to securely lend their smartphones and accept Wave payments.
Key details

- Wave covers one annual trip to one of our mission countries in Africa and an $800 annual stipend to meet with colleagues near your home base.

- Performance evaluations are conducted twice a year, and bonuses and promotions are awarded to employees who have been with the company for at least six months and have achieved excellent performance.
- Major benefits:
- Subsidized health insurance for you and your dependents and retirement contributions (both vary from country to country).

- Flexible vacation, with most folks taking between 30-40 days per year.
- $10,000 annual charitable donation matching.
Requirements
- 1 year of professional experience as a software engineer, with some experience in Python.

You might be a good fit if you
- Reflexively ask yourself: Is this code the best way to satisfy users? You want to deeply understand the inner workings of the tools you use.
- You want to learn how to solve difficult problems and are not afraid to ask for help when you get stuck. Passionate about learning about complex systems.
- Able to communicate clearly with colleagues who work, speak, and think differently.
- Try to make it easy for the next engineer to touch your code.
- Always strive to improve yourself as a programmer and as a colleague.
