Job description

The Agricultural Marketing Specialist (Entry Level Specialist) is responsible for representing the United States Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) Agency (USDA) in Senegal, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Mauritania , Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and the Gambia.

The incumbent facilitates connections between U.S. exporters and host country importers, identifies marketing activities to increase business opportunities, and addresses market access issues affecting agricultural products of the United States. Develop and maintain multiple contacts with industry and government stakeholders (operating to mid-level) to seek cooperation on important agricultural issues.

Analyze and write reports on agricultural products, market developments and market policies. Implement and evaluate various planned projects and activities, including market promotion and commercial development programs. 

Job requirements

  • At least three years of professional experience is required in one or more of the areas of agribusiness, agricultural/commodity marketing, agricultural policy, business/project management, and marketing analysis/research, including analysis and writing of key reports.
  • Good knowledge of FAS objectives, programs, requirements, and reporting procedures, as well as U.S. agricultural policies and trade practices.
  • Extensive knowledge of agricultural practices, market conditions and host country government policies.
  • It is necessary to be familiar with the structure of the host government and the responsibilities of the various ministries and agencies, legislative and parliamentary processes related to economic, trade and agricultural policy issues.
  • Good understanding of the international agreements related to agricultural policy as well as the theories and concepts of supply and demand in agribusiness.
  • A bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics, food and agricultural marketing, agriculture, agribusiness or international trade is required.

Skills and abilities

  • Good working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook) to create documents and spreadsheets, maintain and update databases, and develop presentations.
  • Use specialized FAS software for reporting purposes.
  • Must be familiar with agricultural production, global agricultural trade concept, general marketing strategy and economic supply and demand concept.
  • Required to analyze statistical data and maintain datasets for accurate product and trade reporting.
  • Prepare detailed and complex market and trade policy reports as required.
  • Must have excellent time management skills to deal with a variety of tasks and deadlines.
  • The ability to work effectively with government, public and private individuals to gather information and solve business problems.
  • Level 4 (Fluent) reading/speaking/writing French; and requires level 4 (fluent) reading/speaking/writing in English. (This can be checked.)
