Communications and Media Officer – Francophone Africa.

  • Based: EJF office in Dakar, Senegal
  • Contract: Full-time, fixed term until August 2027

  • Salary range: 600 000 – 800 000 XOF according to skills and experience

Position overview

We are seeking a driven, skilled Communications and Media Officer with excellent organizational and copywriting abilities, a solid network of media connections, and a knack for telling a compelling story. In addition to developing and implementing an ambitious communications and media strategy for EJF’s projects in Francophone Africa, your duties as the organization’s Francophone Africa Communications and Media Officer will include securing broad media coverage for EJF’s activities and mission.

Someone with a solid background in journalism or working in a press office who is passionate about putting powerful stories that propel tangible progress toward a more sustainable planet would be a good fit for this post.

Key responsibilities

  • Create a proactive network of interested journalists to increase the caliber of coverage of Senegal’s fishing sector and West Africa in general, as well as to obtain substantial media attention for EJF’s projects.
  • Determine and contact target radio networks for radio shows, and assist local communities in interacting with radio reporters.
  • Answer questions from the media and collaborate with others to maximize coverage chances.
  • Organize workshops for journalist training.
  • Organize press conferences and travel to make sure major events, especially those involving high-profile supporters and guest speakers, operate well.
  • Create content for websites, social media, press releases, and other communication materials including posters, banners, and booklets.
  • Promote project films and radio programmes to both national media outlets and at local screening events
  • Ensure that all communications materials comply with EJF’s branding
  • Ensure the full, factual accuracy of all published information
  • Prepare detailed monthly reports, including all media coverage, highlighting challenges and opportunities

This position requires regular work trips within Senegal and occasional travels within the region and abroad may be considered.

Essential skills and attributes

  • Excellent working understanding of the media environment in Senegal and, ideally, the larger West and Central African area, as well as experience working in a media/press team. Having contacts already is advantageous.
  • Excellent news sense and the capacity to communicate difficult ideas to a variety of audiences, including nearby fishing communities
  • Capacity to write fact-checked and inspirational copy for print and web
  • A degree in public relations, journalism, media, communications, or a related discipline
  • A history of completing projects with little oversight
  • Outstanding communication skills both in writing and speaking, especially in French and Wolof (high advantage), and fluency in both written and spoken English
    tactful, amiable, and composed under duress
  • Self-assured, tough, persistent, and cooperative in your approach
  • Enthusiastic about human rights and environmental problems

Desirable skills

  • Experience working within television or radio media, including operating a camera and conducting recorded interviews.
  • Previous experience of working on environmental or fisheries issues.
